Following the conclusion of his 26-day indefinite hunger strike in support of students protesting against NEET exam irregularities, renowned climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk has hit back strongly at critics and trolls questioning his decision to call off the protest.
In a newly released video message titled “Do I Need A Character Certificate From Anyone!”, Wangchuk asserted that he does not need proof or certification from anyone to validate his dedication or intentions.

- Questioning After 26 Days of Fasting: Expressing his pain over the backlash, Wangchuk pointed out that after surviving in Delhi’s scorching heat for nearly a month—losing 11 kilograms of weight and muscle mass—having his motives questioned is disheartening. He remarked, “Shame on a mindset that breeds such ugly thoughts.”
- Refuting ‘Secret Deal’ Allegations: Dismissing claims made by critics regarding a hidden compromise with the government, he clarified that the fast was called off not because of a secret deal, but only after receiving a formal written assurance from the authorities.
- Concerns Over Crackdown and Violence: Wangchuk explained that tensions in Delhi were escalating, and he feared a potential police crackdown on the student protesters. Drawing parallels from past events in Ladakh, he stated he did not want young students to face lathi-charge or police force, which prompted him to prioritize peace and end the strike.
